USFS land on upland ridges surrounded by private lands. This forest type is probably the predominant type on this USFS parcel, and appears very abundant in Pocahontas County.;Dry knob mapped as Helderberg limestone but also as Tuscarora formation. Soils appear to have little or no lime influence. Forest is dominated by chestnum toak with scatteredwhite pine and hemlock (some dying from adelgid) over a tall shrub layer dominated by mountain laurel. Shrub layer shows signs of sever browsing or possibly decline due to shading under the closed canopy, or both, short shrub layer mostly browsed to nubbins.
Representativeness
Extensive oak-white pine / ericad forest, compare to BLUE. Matrix forest on dry slopes and ridges. Canopy in some places has more pure deciduous composition, but white pine is abundant throughout in understory.
