Large patch of forest with mesic tulip poplar - basswood in the moist rich coves with a more sterile oak - tulip poplar forest on the noses. Upslope there is an exposed cliff.;Rich mesic forest on a steep N facing slope above a small tributary of the Shavers Fork River. The forest is dominated by tulip poplar over a lush herb layer. Which is primarily robust stinging wood nettle. There are lots of limestone chunks lying on the forest floor. Although the forest canopy is dense the trees are spaced far apart with some slope creep evident. The soil is very slick and highly erodable.
Representativeness
Large patch of mesic northern cove forest dominated by Liriodendron tulipifera / Laportea canadensis. Plot was placed to sample the mapped limestone on the W flank of McGowen Mountain.
