Deciduous forest with young spruce surrounds this polygon both on Mon Forest side and private land (to west). Telecommunications tower is a few hundred meters away on remnant sandstone cap of Green Knob.;Forest is vigorous but not tall on this high ridge, "old" spruce polygon. No sandstone present but soil are sandy-erosional remnants. Highest elevation spruce forest, mapped as Mauch Chunk geology. Down trees and tipped root mounds add structure. Forest floor has many yellow birch leaves which have dropped (still green) in heavy rain this week. Forest probably grew up after stand-replacing logging (and fire?) around 1900-1910. Density-dependant mortality evident in T3 spruce. Vigorous spruce regeneration.
Representativeness
Plot placed in typical part of "old" polygon, with some open areas, some shrub cover, and some doghair spruce.
