Landscape Narrative ? The surrounding forest is owned by the USFS and is used as timber land. Up the ridge to the W ca. 0.5 miles is Bear Haven. The Stuart Memorial Drive is ca. 60m below the plot.;Nice stand of 2nd growth Hemlock growing on the cool N side of a small ridge spur. The forest is very open with little to no S2 or H layers. Dense mats of mosses cover the forest floor. No noticable sign of the woody adelgid and these trees appear to be somewhat healthy. The Birch trees are only 1/3 leafed out.
Representativeness ? Small patch community of Hemlock forest. Plot was sampled to get a final snapshot of the upland Hemlock forest before its likely extirpation due to woody adelgid.
