One of the nicest limestone coves in this vicinity. Old roads are grown over, trees are mature with abundant downfall in the stream bottom. Evidence of ramp harvest downstream (closer to road).;Lower slope above an unamed tributary stream of the Shaver's Fork River. Area enriched by Greenbrier limestone with stark boundaries clearly visible in abundance of spring ephemerals. Forest of mixed hardwoods including sugar maple, American beech, basswood, white ash, and red oak. Beech are sick, many dead, with abundant root sprouts. (10-6-2009 revisit - Dense herb layer dominated by black cohosh, stinging wood nettle, and white snake root. The tree canopy is quite dense. The trees have only just began changing for the fall. Mostly sugar maple. Many of the forbs have also began to die back. The flagging marking the plot's boundaries still remained from this spring. Few beech nuts, acorns, or hickory nuts are present in or around the plot.)
Representativeness
Sampled on 4-24-2009 leaf-off with spring ephemeral herbs. Cool aspect of limestone exposure. Highest cover of ramps in this ramp - full cove. See another plot in same cove from earlier year. (10/6/2009 BPS - Fall revisit to complete plot from earlier in
