Little Black Fork is 30m SW of the plot center. Much of the forest along the stream is successional tulip poplar with a dense and lush herb layer. Upslope to the NE is a small sandstone cliff break. Above the cliff the forest appears younger.;Second growth deciduous forest dominated by Red Oak. The forest floor is covered with thin (1-5cm) plates of sandstone (>10cm-.5m). There is very little S2 or herb cover in the plot, likely due to the high rock cover.
Representativeness
Medium sized patch of deciduous forest / Rhododendron. This plot is very similar to plots sampled at the Gauley River NRA. Here it is cooler and more mesic.
