Roadless section of USFS in river gorge and bottom. Forests are mature 2nd growth with many monospecific successional patches. Tuliptree upslope on this side of river. Large hemlocks across river are looking sickly.;Seldom flooded alluvial terrace with patches of hemlock-birch interspersed with patches of tuliptree. There is a back-channel moat which captures seepage behind levee forest. Canopy is dominated by yellow birch with hemlock in subcanopy. There is abundant downwood, but no obvious flotsom. Herbs are lush and diverse.
Representativeness
Large patch of floodplain / alluvial terrace forest. Plot samples phase with yellow birch and eastern hemlock, other patches have huge tuliptrees, or huge eastern hemlock / great laurel.
