Large depositional bar and floodplain are enclosed in a loop of the Shavers Fork. Historic land used involved draining and farming this bottomland and traces of old oxbows or wetlands are almost impossible to distinguish. MNF and Tom Biebighauser have been plugging drains, building groundwater dams and excavating pools to restore wetland habitats in July 2009 and July 2010. This excavated feature dates to July 2009, 14 months ago. Prior to restoration, old fields, ditches, wet meadows and shrub swamps (mostly in ditches) occurred here.;Aquatic bed and bare soil/mud surrounded by killcow margin and grading upward into goldenrod and wet meadow. This 14 month old excavation already supports a suprising diversity of native wetland plants (early successional community).
Representativeness
Plot was placed to sample small restored wetland with aquatic bed species in floodplain of Shavers Fork. This is one of several dozen restored wetlands at the Queens wetland site. We were introduced to the stie by Terry Evans and Andy Stump of MNF.
