Road/trail runs along ridgeline to access mowed wildlife openings. There are scattered red spruce outside plot which become dominant in the subcanopy in some places.;High elevation mountaintop on shale lithology. Community is a deciduous northern hardwoods forest dominated by medium size yellow birch with scattered, larger open growth black cherry and mostly dead or sick beech. Younger forest than the flanks, due to clearing of ridgetop for pasture. Canopy is somewhat stunted due to elevation effects.
