Popular camping and fishing area in the bottom of Gandy Creek. Upland forests to the south are mostly northern hardwoods from slope bottom to top of leading ridge (see MONF.443 and 444.;Floodplain along a perennial stream. Floodplain has several levels of terrace between creek and road. There is fluvial topograhpy of levees and swales. Community is a mixed deciduous evergreen forest dominated by large red oak with smaller hemlock and ash over a patchy tall shrub layer dominated by giant rhododendron. Flooding is probably infrequent.
Representativeness
Small patch of hemlock - red oak floodplain forest, less hemlock than most stands sampled on the Shavers Fork, etc. Plot is on lowest terrace adjacent to the stream.
