Large tract of forest land owned and managed for timber and recreation by the Monongahela National Forest. Much of the surrounding land is covered with northern hardwoods. The lumberjack trail is located ca 30m south of plot center. See plots MONF 446, 447, and 449 for more context.;The plot is the bottom of a sinkhole. There are several exposed limestone outcrops along the sides. There is what apepars to be an intermittent stream which flows in from the W edge. The bottom of the depression is covered with large limestone boulders. There are several "cave" openings between the boulders and the base of the outcrops. The sinkhole is overhung by T2 yellow birch and sugar maple. The bottom of the depression is covered with S1 and S2 gooseberry. There is cool air flowing from the cave openings.
Representativeness
Plot sized patch of yellow birch / gooseberry sinkhole forest. This is unlike anything I have sampled before.
