Land locked USFS tract with older forests on this flank (see plots 468,469). Greenbrier limestone is exposed in pastures on private land, but we haven't seen outcrops on USFS.;Steep rocky middle slope. Geology is mapped as limestone, but surficial rock is platy sandstone without acid reaction. However, site supports a mesophytic forest with large basswood, tulip tree, and sugar maple. Forest is probably maturing second growth- there is abundant woody debris in stand mostly smaller size class than living canopy trees-from density dependent mortality?
Representativeness
Plot placed to maximize cover by basswood, to represent rocky cove forest repeated in steep bowls.
