Remote ridgetop on WV/VA border, adjacent (or part of?) USFS Recreation Area. Downslope forests are dominated by white pine in various mixtures, likely successional following logging and burning. Other ridgetop communities seen include oak - hickory.;Warm aspect ridge shoulder on acidic soils. Community is forest dominated by large chestnut oaks with some black and white oak. White pine are represented in the tall shrub layer, but upper canopy is entirely deciduous. Chestnut oak is also in tall shrub layer. Understory is a dense layer of huckleberry and other ericad shrubs. Trees are somewhat stunted and knarled, there is abundant downwood, may qualify as old growth.
Representativeness
Small - large patch on warmest (in WV) aspect ridge shoulder. Chestnut oak - huckleberry forest. Contrasts with white oak - white pine matrix downslope.
