Trail and small creek are nearby. Mesophytic forest with hemlock over rhododendron is confined to narrow zone along creek, but may represent climax of larger area.;Broad, sterile basin drained by a small creek. Gently sloping bottom supports a conifer - deciduous mixture, successional forest. Stand includes large white pine and mostly smaller white oak, red maple, hemlock, and pitch pine. There is a dense, evergreen tall shrub layer codominant by catawba rhododendron, great laurel, and mountain laurel. Extremely deep litter and duff.

Large patch, average expression of successional pine forest which is extensive in this valley bottom. Sampled spot next to trail to minimize bushwacking laurel.
