Matrix forest on ridgetop is more typical northern hardwoods with buckeye lacking or scattered in the tall shrub layer. Next to plot is apatch od successional black locust.;Near the top of a huge south-facing cove off the flank of a high elevation mountain ridge. Small drain is flanked by sandstone outcrops on both sides. Along a small eroded channel are a line of buckeye trees growing, in clumps near it's upper elevational limit in WV. Associated canopy trees are red oak and sugar maple. There is alush tall herb layer with wood nettle and other mesophytic species. Very high herb diversity.
Representativeness
Small patch of buckeye dominance along drainage channel. Plot is long going up and downhill. Similar to plot sampled nearby a couple of weeks ago, but here there is a steep drain.
