Trail to High Rocks is nearby, through this same forest type. More mesic positions grade to northern hardwoods. High Rocks has dry sandstone faces with lichens overhanging ledges with lots of unusual weeds. Nine-bark is rooted in sun.;Shoulder slope of high mountain ridge above a band of sandstone ledges. Community is a deciduous forest dominated by large red oak. Trees are slightly stunted and there is abundant large snags and down wood. The subcanopy is dominated by beech and cherry and shrub layer has abundant witch hazel. Pensylvania sedge, New York fern, and lily of the valley are conspicuous in herb layer.

Small patch high elevation red oak forest. Placed plot to sample large trees, which are scattered, esp. along the rock ledge and along the trail.
