Short distance to north is a limestone cliff w/ white cedar (MONF.488). To south up the high point on ridge is acidic chestnut oak, including some old growth.;Rocky ridgeline w/ Helderberg limestone outcrop. East aspect just below ridgeline on steep slope. Community is a deciduous forest with a few scattered juniper. The short canopy is dominated by chinquapin oak and red oak, over slightly shorter hop-hornbeam. Tall grasses are the most conspicuous elements of the understory.
Representativeness
Small patch chinquapin oak on cool aspect, upper rocky slope. Relatively mesic site chinquapin to compare w/ more xeric sites typical in smokehole.
