Upstream the Glady Fork Runs through private land. At the plot, the upland and river bottom are both owned and managed by the USFS. The surrounding floodplain communities observed are eastern hemlock - yellow birch / great laurel forested swamp, yellow poplar - red oak / great laurel floodplain forest, and small patches of sycamore / wrinkled leaf goldenrod - flattop white aster tall herb / woodland repeated up and downstream. The Allegeheny Trail is located 50 m N of the plot. At this point it is still a driveable FS road.;Frequently flooded cobble bar dominated by Solidago rugosa, Doellingeria umbellata, and Solidago gigantea. The plot is very weedy with Microstegium also having large cover. There are a few T2 and S1 sycamore at the upstream (T2) and downstream end (S1) end of the high water river island where the plot is located. Two plants tracked as rare by the WVNHP are also found in the plot (Carex trichocarpa and Hasteola suaveolens). Recent highwater has knocked many of the tall herbs over, exposing more of the Microstegium.
Representativeness
Plot sized patch of a woodland/tall herb community growing on frequently flooded cobble zone. Similar to plot MONF.510 only here it is weedier (Microstegium) and it has Carex trichocarpa. Plot was placed to sample cobble bar along river observed on SAMB20
