USFS land behind locked gates, roads are well maintained to access gas wells. Downslope are zones of oak/ericad on less fertile lithologies. Road just below plot is little used ~ grown up in tall fescue.;Gentle sloping "bench" on east flank of Allegheny Front, topography possibly created by erosion of Greenbrier Limestone, although surficial rocks are sandstone. Community is a deciduous forest with mixed oaks and hickories, stand age roughly 50 years old. Shrub layers are sparse, but herb layer is diverse and includes areas of high clonal cover by Carex woodii.
