At the top of the rock the forest is dominated by chestnut oak - scarlet oak / Vaccinium pallidum but quickly becomes weedy and successional around the old CCC camp ca. 100 m NW. Below the cliff a mesic forest with red oak, tulip poplar, and basswood can be observed. The North Fork South Branch Potomac is located ca 100 m to the SE. Directly across the river ca. 250 m is a similar cliff with full sum exposure at the time of the survey.;Steep SE facing sandstone cliff is overhung by large chestnut oak trees, although none are rooted in the plot. There are a few S1 shrubs and herbaceous plants growing on small ledges and cracks on cliff. Most of the cliff is sheer rock with micro and macro lichen cover. Several bolted climbing routes were observed.
Representativeness
Large patch of lichen covered steep sandstone cliff face with a SE exposure. Differs from other plots on similar substrate. Here the rock is in a narrow N-S gorge and only recieves full sunlight roughly 1/2 the day.
