Area is owned by the USFS and is managed as wilderness. Once home to an ancient red spruce forest the area was logged and burned around the turn of the century. This plot has more soil development than MONF.541 and therefore has developed low shrub cover. The surrounding landscape is a mosaic of upland and wetland spruce / heath forest and woodland, with small areas without spruce dominance such as this plot and MONF.541.;Open and sunny low growing shrubland dominated by minnie bush, low bush blueberry, and velvet-leaf blueberry. Crinkled hairgrass is scattered throughout the plot. Many of the deciduous shrubs have began there fall change. Openess of plot is likely due to turn of the century logging and burning and is maintained by weathering and lack of soil.
Representativeness
Small patch of a low growing heath shrubland. Plot was placed to maximize cover by blueberries and minimize cover for both red spruce and bare rock. Similar to blueberry plots sampled near Bear Rocks.
