Large tract of land owned by USFS and managed as wilderness / back country. Surrounding forest is a mosaic of upland and wetland red spruce / heath forest and woodland. The South Prong trail is located ca. 100m W. The plot is located just over the eastern edge of the Allegheny Front.;Open boulderfield with sandstone boulders ranging in size from pick up trucks to the size of cinderblocks. The boulders are covered with an even mixture of Umblicaria muhlenbergia and crustose lichens. The boulderfield is surrounded on all sides by wind flagged red spruce.
Representativeness
Discontinuos small patches of open lichen covered boulderfield. Plot was placed to maximize cover of open rock and minimize cover by woody species. Similar to plots sampled at Red Creek overlook and plot sampled on Roaring Plains.
