Remote USFS section with access to ridge via primitive 4x4 road. On west flank are scattered patches of red pine forest on warmer aspects, with variable red oak forests on other aspects. There is an old opening uphill, behind plot with stone walls and piles.;West Aspect of high elevation ridge shoulder subject to high winds (and ice?). Commuinty is a forest of red pine of mixed sizes, which are about the same height as a few scattered red oak, which must be much older. Shrub and herb layers are sparse. Tree height is probably stunted by exposure to weather. A few large red pine may be older than the dominant cohort. There is little current regeneration.
Representativeness
Small patch of red pine forest, which appears to be southernmost patch along this ridge system. All the patches seen today have abundant red oak and hairgrass, as captured in this plot. Other stands to N have more age class diversity.
