Across creek is basswood-sugar maple with rich herb layer. Contrast may be due to geologic break, colluvial vs. residual soil, and / or aspect. Upslope, are some basswood.;Lower, NE facing slope of huge cove. Below plot is old RR grade bridge w/ footrail, used to log forest 80-100 years ago. Forest is deciduous northern hardwoods w/ scattered hemlock. Yellow birch and black cherry are dominant in canopy, with sugar maple well represented in subcanopy. Shrubs are sparse. Herb layer is dominated by wood fern and may flower.

Large patch / matrix forest on acidic substrate. To contrast to MONF.544 rich forest across creek.
