To the NE is the Forks of Cranberry trail. Between here and Rt 150 the forest ranges from red maple - black cherry - American beech / mountian woodfern forest in the decidous areas to red spruce / southern mountain cranberry / mountain woodfern and red spruce / yellow birch forests in the conifer dominated areas. Large tract of Wilderness Area managed by USFS. Between the boulders in the shady depths the rock faces are covered with blue and green dust lichens (Lepraria ?).;Open exposed shrubland growing on large sandstone boulders (dump truck sized). Plot is on top of several boulders separated by 1m wide by 7 m deep crevices. The surface of the plot ranges by 1 to 2 m. Many of the exposed boulder tops have rounded channels caused by erosion. Much of the boulder tops are bare with most of the crust lichens on the vertical faces. The vascular vegetation is confined to mossy flats and crevides where duff sccumulates. Charcoal found in plot. Remnant of old forest fire? Or more recent camp fire?

Small patch of open shrubland with red spruce / minnie bush growing on top of lichen covered boulders. Plot was placed to maximize cover of open rock and minimize cover by red spruce. Plot samples the bouldertops not the caverns between. Similar to plots
