Wilderness area with 2nd growth, mostly even-aged forests including northern hardwoods, spruce, and hemlock.;Rocky, level ridgetop on sandstone lithology. Sandstone boulder substrate is covered with deep organic mat, over sandy, rocky sterile soil. Second growth mixed forest is strongly dominated by hemlock with deciduous associates and a few red spruce. There is a fairly dense shrub layer of evergreen rhododendron, without much sign of browse. No evidence of hemlock decline or adelgid. Old decaying logs on ground.
