USFS Recreation Area around Lake Sherwood has concentrated activity around lake and little-used longer distance loop trails. Matrix upland forests are white pine - white oak.;Rocky levee along creek, near bottom of ravine which cuts the NW flank of Allegheny Mountain. Rocks may have been deposited by flows of side channels, and hydrology and microtopography was likely affected by road construction (R.R.?) and logging. Aspect and topo position collect cold air, making habitat for yellow birch, which is otherwise uncommon in the vicinity.
Representativeness
Small patch of yellow birch in cold cove. Long narrow plot to stay in area with dominance by yellow birch. Community continues downstream about 100 m.
