Large block of roadless area owned and managed by the monongahela National Forest as Wilderness. Upslope at ridge break is a large sandstone cliff (see plots MONF.543,544, and 548). Above the cliff on ridge is a dense stunted forest of Eastern hemlock - red spruce / mountain laurel - great laurel. Below the cliff is a similar community only with larger trees and a deciduous tree component as well. South, East and West of the plot is a large patch red maple - yellow birch / great laurel forest. Otter Creek trail is located ca. 200 m S of plot and Otter Creek is another 50 m beyond that.;Somewhat mesic forest on S facing slope. Forest is dominated by Acer rubrum - Prunus serotina - Betula lenta / Fagus grandifolia / Dennstaedtia punctilobula. Substrate is very rocky with a high cover by moss. The forest is low in diversity. Much of the o'story seems even aged. Little if any recent anthropologic disturbance. The shrub layers are rather sparse. Possibly due to browsing. There are a few game trails dissecting the plot.
