Large shale barren above river and below limestone band which supports glade, woodland, forest, and cliff communities. The shale barren itself is quite large with a range of aspects and slope positions with corresponding variation in vegetation structure and composition.;South facing ridge shoulder above steep shale ledges. Community is a woodland of Quercus prinus, Carya, and Pinus virginiana with sedges and grasses dominant in understory. Relatively high herb cover and diversity compared to shale barren on steep ledges below. Blueberries are absent. Sawn stumps in plot may be from logging of Juniperus for fence posts.
Representativeness
Small zone on upper slope of shale barren - much higher cover by graminoids and forbs compared to dryer, rockier shale barren down slope.
