Large roadless area extends from foreknobs over top of mountain and down to Shavers Fork River. Candidate Wilderness Area.;Rocky area on lower slopes of mountain with maturing secondary forest of Quercus rubra with Acer saccharum coming up. Rock "river" is about 20 meters wide and runs down slope between 2 low verticle ridges, possibly due to long term slow or ancient alluvial processes. Ground flora is indicative of acidic soil. Large boulders are capped with Polypodium fern and mosses.
Representativeness
Small patch of boulders (rock river) in large matrix forest. Overstory dominance probably quite similar to matrix forest but possibly higher herb diversity due to microsites and decreased deer herbivory in rocky area. Out of rock piles Thelypteris novebor
