Slopes above have younger oak forests with Pieris floribunda abundant in understory. Floodplain across road supports younger white pine forests and other alluvial communities.;Toeslope dissected by small streams. Virgin forest of white pine and white oak with pine regeneration. Stand varies from near pure deciduous to more pine dominance. White pine forms an emergent canopy over arching oaks. Many old growth features including downfall of various ages, snags and canopy gaps. Woody debris includes rotted downfall with moss colonization. Increment bore holes observed in large pines.

Small patch old growth stand. Plot includes a couple of the larger pines and part of a canopy gap with downfall. Same stand studied by Abrams et al. (1995) old growth paper (J. Ecology 83:123-133).
