Large roadless area, candidate Wilderness Area. Matrix forest at this elevation is northern hardwoods which is successional to Picea rubens.;Rocky shoulder slope of mountain top. Forest is dominated by Quercus rubra and northern hardwoods. No evidence of logging, but road is just behind plot - this is surely second growth after logging or fire. There are many beech snags and lots of down wood due to beech decline and ice storms. Tree and shrub forms appear stunted. Sugar maples in subcanopy have dead tops - likely too acidic or too severe microclimate for persistant growth of this species.
Representativeness
Narrow zone on rocky shoulder and just downslope. Area of dominance by Quercus rubra near its elevational limit. Community is discontinuous and often missing on cooler aspects where northern hardwoods prevail. Plot sampled on more level than average site.
