There is a closed roadway uphill from plot and some old homestead clearings in the area. Downslope grades quickly to red oak forest less affected by ice damage. Matrix community on mountain top is northern hardwoods with patches of red spruce forest. Wilderness candidate area.;Shoulder slope on west flank of mountain. Vegetation is a second growth forest of red oak with northern hardwoods and some spruce regeneration. Rocky ground with a patchy herb layer dominated by ferns and sedges. There is an accumulation of dead wood despite relative young age of forest, due to mechanical damage from ice storms. Sugar maples in community are stressed or dying, possibly due to nutritional constraints and/or susceptability to ice damage.
Representativeness
Discontinuous large patch extending in a narrow zone on ridge shoulder. This plot is a younger stand compared to similar vegetation sampled by MONF.82
