Slightly warmer aspects at this slope position have high elevation red oak. Nearby forest on private land has been more recently cut. Matrix community on mountain top is northern hardwoods similar to this plot with patches of red spruce forest. Wilderness candidate area.;Bedrock/boulder outcrop zone on slope shoulder of high mountain top. Vegetation is older second growth forest of northern hardwoods dominated by Betula allegheniensis and Prunus serotina. Flat topped rock in plot with Polypodium appalachianum and Oclemena acuminatus flourishing due to protection from deer herbivory (out of reach). Elsewhere in plot there is a lush cover by ferns (herbivore resistant). Spruce saplings scattered in understory attest to likely climax.
historical logging, deer browse evident based on rock top "exclosure," Ilex montana and Oclemena acuminata seem to be decreasers, ferns are increasers.
