Higher-elevation floodplain (roughly 1 m above current water level) has tall herbs and woody shrubs. Sycamore and basswood overhanging from higher banks. Virginia pine community sits above (MORG.9) on exposed bedrock bluffs. Private land buffered by forest with hayfields behind. Private gated dirt road and campsite 200m upstream.;Frequently flooded cobble bar with dense cover of Justicia americana - Ptilimnium fluviatile growing downstream of a bend in Sleepy Creek. Level cobble bar is 0.25 cm above current water level. River is constrained by bedrock here with shale/argillaceous sandstone bluffs on either side. High water table and flooding keep this community open. Ptilimnium is in full bloom on the cobble bars and in bedrock cracks, where the bluffs meet the stream (below bankfull height)..
Representativeness
Large discontinuous patch of Justicia americana - Ptilimnium fluviatile. Plot was placed to sample community at known Ptilimnium site (#65). Plot includes river and both banks, just downstream of a water gap and U bend in river.
