Deer exclosure on Nathaniel Mountain on ridge above plot has oak saplings, but virtually none found outside. Also has higher forb diversity (but still low).;Spur ridge on west side of Nathaniel Mountain. Reputed "virgin timber" (Bob Smith) of dwarf oak and pine on dry rocky convex sites. Understory dominated by Vaccinium pallidum and Kalmia latifolia. Low herb diversity. Oaks hit by gypsy moth this year and past.

Dry ridges and side ridges. Concave aspects have larger trees, more Quercus rubra and less heath cover.
