Downslope is more frequently flooded sycamore (NCTC.6) and silver maple rooted in water at sample date. Behind levee is successional box-elder thicket on old farmland.;Occassionally flooded levee along Potomac River. There is abundant flotsam in plot but dry litter suggests it did not flood this spring. Old fenceline runs through plot. Community is a deciduous forest dominated by bitternut hickory with some black walnut, hackberry, and box-elder. Sycamore are rooted downslope but have canopy cover in plot. Lush herb layer with false mermaid and rue grass.

Narrow strip of bitternut hickory forest on levee. Repeated in similar position across road to east. May have been more extensive prior to agricultural development on 100 yr. floodplain.Early spring sample. Canopy cover estimated as leaf-on. Plot reveiste
