Stand becomes slightly more mesic downslope, with bottom of draw resmbling a high gradient Acer rubrum/Thelypteris noveboracensis forest seep. Opposite draw slopes on colluvial slopes are dominated by Liriodendron and Prunus serotina with high herb and fern diversity.;Gentle dipslope on plateau with a young, even-aged secondary forest domianted by oaks with a large component of Magnolia fraseri. Understory is dominated by scattered Kalmia latifolia and Smilax rotundifolia (mostly defoliated by deer?). Sparse herb cover and diversity. Many Quercus rubra are swollen at base and seem to be dying.
Representativeness
Oak/heath community on residual soils of convex plateau positions. This plot has high amount of Magnolia fraseri (possibly due to less severe aspect?), taken to represent variation in the dry oak type.
