Further back up slough in fine sediment drop zone Scirpus pungens is more abundant (plot NERI.229). behind that is a riverscour woodland of Platanus and Betula nigra which connects to river at upstream end of "island". Center of island is less often flooded forest.;Backwater slough which probably converts to high energy forward channel flow during flood events. Large cobble substrate with sand and silt sediments between cobbles and in vegetated beds. Community of mixed Justicia americana and Saururus cernnus under scattered overarching (leaning) Betula nigra and Platanus occidentalis. Very low diversity, but includes a mixture of low energy flood species (Saururus, Scirpus pungens) along with the high energy tolerant Justicia.
Representativeness
Relatively extensive example of this mixed community type, extends back in slough to plot NERI.229.
