Long stretches of sycamore-river birch woodland dominate along the river on varying substrate. One small patch of big bluestem "prairie" was seen but this is not typical community at least along the Lower New. Cobble bars along rapids zones have large Justicia beds. Lower gorge slopes above disturbed road corridor include typical sugar maple-buckeye/wood nettle forest.;Sandy river bank/small trib alluvial fan along straight slow stretch of river. Row of large trees lean out towards river thus creating opening for this herbaceous community. Trees are losing leaves somewhat early (may be stressed by bank undercutting and burial by sediments from trib). Opening supports high diversity herb community. May be early sere following release of camping pressure after road closure. Or woody vegetation may be supressed by flooding/hydrology.
Representativeness
Unusual small patch community on sandy alluvial fan. Plot covers most of patch.
Partly flooded by trib this summer, may be flooded by river occasionaly. Adjacent areas with bare trampled soils may recover in time if road and campground remains closed.
