This plot represents a long, narrow strip bordering the New River. It is a bedrock terrace dominated by bare bedrock. Some areas have lots of moss and lichen species covering the bedrock. Herbaceous layer is very poorly developed on the thin soils that do exist. Some small Pinus virginiana and Juniperus virginiana are scattered throughout growing out of cracks in the bedrock. The New River is immediately west of this strip and to the east is more Flatrock Community. Here, however, the tree coverage is much greater. Dominant trees include Pinus virginiana, Juniperus virginiana, and Quercus stellata. Fraxinus americana is also quite common. The bedrock in this area mostly covered with a moss layer. The herbaceous layer is greater in this area, but it is still poorly developed because of the thin soils. Asplenium platyneuron is a typical herbaceous element found in this area.;Plot is located on bedrock which parallels the New River. This bedrock is mostly exposed with the exception of small pockets of soiled areas. In the past this bedrock would have been scoured by flooding.
Representativeness
This plot is representative of the edge community at Camp Brookside. It is mainly scoured rock with some degree of moss covering. There are also typically some scattered Pinus virginiana and Juniperus virginiana. Going farther away from the river it ch
Flooding in the past has scoured the bedrock leaving it mostly barren of vegetation. The dominant vegetation layer is the nonvascular layer. There is an old camp nearby (Camp Brookside) now converted into a NPS Ranger Station. The area is much used by fisherman.
