Gorge slope forests up hill recovering from logging are represented by plots 256 and 255. These have higher diversity but lower cover in understory.;Flat bench, possibly an ancient alluvial terrace, above river in area of old townsite. Forest of medium large trees is dominated by early successional species (Liriodendron, Robinia), evidence of past clearing. Heavy tall shrub layer dominated by Lindera benzoin and forb layer are typical of level sites with high site index. Geology and soils are mapped as shale, but influence of sandstone colluvium is evident.
Representativeness
ELU 1330 (low elevation dry flat on shale). Community seems typical of these previously logged benches above the river floodplain.
Evidence of past clearing (even aged stand of early successional species and little coarse woody debris) and other evidence of past human occupation in area (rock piles, old garbage etc...).
