Slope below reported as "mixed-meso" with tulip poplar, red oak, basswood and buckeye, but red photo signature is evident - may have significant hemlock and big rhododendron. Plateau top is dry and dominated by oaks.;On edge of plateau above a steep rocky north facing slope. Forest is dominated by Quercus coccinea and Quercus prinus with an unusual mix of Rhododendron maximum and Gaylussacia baccata in the dense shrub layers. Herbaceous diversity is extremely low. Geology is mapped as Pottsville, but soils are mapped as Gilpin, derived from shale. The latter concurs with soil texture (silt loam) determined in the field.
Representativeness
ELU 2213 (upper slope on sandstone). Plateau edge. May represent "spill-over" of hemlock/rhododendron from slopes below.
