Silver maple forest extends downstream for a ways - intergrading with sycamore-river birch woodland on rockier, more frequently flooded, lower terraces.;Alluvial terrace along river at mouth and downstream from an intermittant creek which deposited some cobble and gravel sediment in plot last summer (2001). High forest canopy dominated by large, widely spaced silver maple. Most of plot away from creek mouth is without recent flood deposits ande has a dense understory of tall shrubs and herbs.
Representativeness
ELU 1333 (gorge slope bottom on shale). Linear, somewhat discontinuous community on deep sandy alluvial soils, usually along straight slow river stretches.
Flood deposits from creek in 2001, also likely seasonal flooding from river. These sandy river banks were probably cleared or disturbed by agriculture, frequent camping etc... before road was closed.
