This plot is representative of a backwater mud flat area. The community is characterized by a very diverse herbaceous layer (often times the herbs are weed species). The main backwater stream is lined by Platanus occidentalis. Juglans nigra, Aesculus flava, and Fraxinus pensylvanica are common along the low area near the stream.;This plot is located on a mud flat area along a backwater stream off the New River. There is a small channel going through the middle of the plot to the main channel (this small channel isn't holding much water now, but it is still saturated throughout).
Representativeness
This plot is representative of a backwater mud flat area. This area is covered with very vigorous herbaceous growth (Herbaceous plants cover nearly the entire ground surface and are also layered on top of one another in many areas). Tree cover is sparse
This plot is very near to the Sandstone Falls Boardwalk and Picnic Area. There is some evidence of past beaver activity. Spraying for black flys was observed near the falls.
