Landscape Narrative ? Part of larger, more acidic, remnant spruce forest, all of which is under conservation easement at The Mountain Institute, (camping and educational use allowed);Mixed spruce-deciduous second growth forest under conservation easement at the Mountain Insistute. Down wood and moss-covered boulders <1m diameter are abundant. Tall well-formed trees. Cores show vigorous growth after probable clear-cutting around 1900, followed by slowly declining growth rates. Substrate has sandstone boulders, but soil has red mauch chunk.
Representativeness ? This stand, which is west of the main spruce stand at the Mountain Institute, is on a richer substrate and has more diversity. Plot was placed in a part of the stand that is relatively undisturbed by campers and hikers, and which is away from linear seep
