Open rock fields adjacent are dominated by Lasallia pensylvanica.;Steep, bouldery, north facing slope below sandstone cliffs and open boulderfield. Community is an open woodland-shrubland dominated by paper birch and mountain ash. Herb layer is patchy, strongly dominated by polypody fern. Rocks have heavy cover of lichens. Shrubland physiognomy may be maintained by shifting substrate and severe microclimate.
