plot is located near Monongahela National Forest boundary. Seneca Rocks is located ca. 200m WSW. Downslope 30 m is a more open glady area with many downed and busted pine trees.;Dry SSW facing rocky ridge nose dominated by Pinus virginiana. Pine is in both the T2 and S1 layers. A few stunted and dead oak trees (red,rock) are scattered throughout the larger stand. The soil is thin and rocky. The forest floor is open and bare with only a few graminoids and an occassional S2 shrub observed. There is some fire sign in just outside the plot. The bedrock in the plot is covered with a variety of lichens. The site is somewhat open, hot, and dry.
Representativeness
Large patch of dry Virginia pine dominated woodland. Plot was placed to maximize cover by Virginia pine and minimize cover by pitch pine. Plot is meant to represent edaphic Virginia pine community.
