Cliff below sampled by PEND.78. Other forests in vicinity include younger oak-hickory. Limestone valley below is cleared with red cedar coming in.;Rounded slope on warm dry aspect of foothill knob, just above a limestone cliff band. Rock here is acidic sandstone. Forest is old growth with very large chestnut oak widely spaced with somewhat smaller red oak. Canopy is open due to fallen limbs and standing snags. Tall shrub layer includes oak and basswood regeneration along with witch hazel. Heaths (and all short shrubs) are sparse, possibly due to heavy browse. Herbs are sparse but diverse ~ probably suffer from deer herbivory.
