Private land with patchy forests influenced by lithology, aspect , and land use. Bottoms are cleared. Old fields have juniper invasions. See PEND.78,79.;Lower middle slope of foothills knob. Soils are influenced by limestone but remain slightly acidic. Forest was selectively logged, maybe ~10 years ago. We speculate that red oak was selectively removed. Logging is patchy, only one stump is in this plot. Remaining trees include hickories, a huge walnut, a red oak, and sugar maples. Tall shrub layer has abundant hop-hornbeam. Shrub layer, tree regen, and herb composition are probably all effected by heavy deer browse.
Representativeness
Variable, large patch rich oak-hickory forest, placed to include red oak, which was probably selected for by recent logging cycle. Other patches have heavy sugar maple.
